Long before the modern name “Africa” became widely adopted, various traditions and historical accounts referred to the continent by other names. Among these is Alkebulan, a name that has come to symbolize Africa’s ancient heritage, rich civilizations, diverse cultures, and enduring contributions to humanity.

For countless generations, the peoples of Alkebulan developed kingdoms, systems of governance, centres of learning, trade networks, spiritual traditions, and cultural achievements that influenced societies far beyond the continent’s shores. The legacy of these civilizations continues to shape the identities, traditions, and aspirations of people of African descent throughout the world.

Within the heritage traditions preserved by The Kingdom of Atmaurium, Africa occupies a central place in understanding the historical journey of its people, culture, and identity. The Kingdom’s teachings encourage the exploration of ancestry, heritage, and historical connections while fostering a deeper appreciation for the enduring relationship between Africa and its worldwide diaspora.

The transition from Alkebulan to Atmaurium represents more than a geographical or historical narrative. It reflects a continuing journey of identity, remembrance, cultural preservation, and reconnection. Today, The Kingdom of Atmaurium Africa Branch seeks to contribute to this ongoing journey by strengthening relationships between Africa and the diaspora, encouraging cultural understanding, supporting educational exploration, and fostering meaningful partnerships that honour the past while helping to shape the future.

The Shared Heritage initiative is founded upon the belief that understanding where we come from can help guide where we are going. The Vision of Prince Uriel Bey

The foundations of The Kingdom of Atmaurium were established through the vision, research, teachings, and writings of Prince Uriel Bey. Through his work, he sought to preserve knowledge relating to history, culture, genealogy, identity, spirituality, and community development. His writings encouraged individuals to pursue self-knowledge, historical awareness, personal responsibility, and a deeper understanding of their heritage.

Prince Uriel Bey believed that knowledge of one’s heritage could serve as a source of empowerment and inspiration for future generations. His work continues to influence the Kingdom’s commitment to education, cultural preservation, leadership development, and international engagement.

Today, Kingdom of Atmaurium seeks to honor that legacy by creating opportunities for learning, dialogue, and cooperation among diverse communities throughout Africa and the diaspora.

Continuing the Legacy

The vision established by Prince Uriel Bey was never intended to exist solely within the pages of books or within the memory of those who knew him personally. It was conceived as a living legacy — one that would continue to evolve through future generations of leadership, education, cultural preservation, and service.

In recognition of this continuing mission, Prince Uriel Bey appointed H.E. Paul Anthony Simons to serve as Minister of Finance of The Kingdom of Atmaurium in a certified ceremonial capacity. Through this appointment, Prince Uriel Bey entrusted him with responsibilities that extended beyond administration and into the long-term stewardship of the Kingdom’s vision and development.

Following the passing of Prince Uriel Bey, on April 8th, 2025 Paul Simons assumed the role of Emperor of The Kingdom of Atmaurium in accordance with the Kingdom’s ceremonial and institutional traditions. In this capacity as Emperor, he continues to support initiatives aimed at preserving, restoring, and advancing the legacy established by Prince Uriel Bey. See Moorish Empire webpage.

Central to this mission is the ongoing work of strengthening understanding between Africa and the diaspora, preserving historical and cultural knowledge, encouraging education and leadership development, and promoting meaningful engagement between communities connected by shared heritage.

Recognizing the importance of establishing a strong presence on the African continent, H.E. Emperor Paul Anthony Simons subsequently appointed H.E. Ephraim Hogan to serve as Director General of The Kingdom of Atmaurium Africa Branch. Under his leadership, Africa Branch serves as a platform for partnership, cultural exchange, leadership development, and community engagement throughout Africa.

Together, these leadership appointments represent a continuation of the Kingdom’s commitment to heritage, education, cultural preservation, and international cooperation. Through the work of the Africa Branch and its growing network of partners and representatives, the vision of Prince Uriel Bey continues to inspire efforts that connect the past with the present while helping to build bridges for future generations.

The Shared Heritage initiative stands as one expression of that continuing legacy — bringing together the histories, cultures, and aspirations of Africa and the worldwide diaspora in pursuit of greater understanding, cooperation, and shared progress.

A Shared Heritage Across Continents

The Kingdom of Atmaurium recognizes both the diversity and the commonality that exist within this broader heritage. Shared Heritage is not intended to diminish the distinct identities of individuals, nations, or communities. Rather, it seeks to provide a platform through which people can explore historical connections, celebrate cultural contributions, and strengthen relationships across continents and generations.

The objective is not to look backward with division, but to look forward with understanding.

For this reason, Kingdom of Atmaurium views heritage as a living legacy that should be preserved, studied, shared, and strengthened. Kingdom of Atmaurium Africa Branch serves as a bridge between Africa and the wider diaspora.
